The 2nd Philippine ESG Investors Summit, a key event highlighting the latest developments in ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) practices, was held on May 14, 2024. CFA Society Philippines proudly partnered in this significant initiative, emphasizing its dedication to advancing ESG principles within the financial industry.
The summit featured esteemed speakers and thought leaders. Ms. Sharon P. Almanza, National Treasurer of the Bureau of the Treasury, delivered the opening keynote, followed by Deputy Governor Chuchi G. Fonacier of Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, who underscored the critical importance of ESG investing.
Notable presentations included:
- Atty. Pedro H. Maniego, Jr. on the ASEAN Corporate Governance Scorecard as a driver for transparency and sustainability.
- Atty. Alain Charles J. Veloso on the Philippines' roadmap for carbon pricing solutions.
- Mr. Jaime F. Mendejar of HSBC on harnessing sustainable finance to support corporate sustainability strategies.
- Mr. Mark Dinesh from AXA Climate and Ms. Katrina F. Francisco from SGV & Co. on the impact of sustainable transitions and biodiversity on business success.
A morning roundtable on investing in recycling infrastructure featured leaders from Cemex, Gobi Partners, Nomura Research Institute, Nestlé Philippines, and SM Hotels and Conventions Corp.
Afternoon sessions included:
- Mr. David Katz of Plastic Bank on ESG as a catalyst for change.
- Ms. Kristine I. Aguirre of KPMG on the effects of ESG quality disclosure in various regulatory regimes.
- Mr. Jozsef C. Acabo of Diligent on practical approaches to ESG transformation.
- Insights from Ms. Ma. Cecilia T. Cruzabra of ACEN, Ms. Ginggay Hontiveros-Malvar of Aboitiz, and Mr. Timothy M. Daniels of SM Investments on transformational leadership and sustainability.
The event concluded with a roundtable on investing in climate action, moderated by Ms. Ping Manongdo, with participants from Quisumbing Torres, Energy Development Corporation, HSBC Philippines, SGV & Co., the Institute of Corporate Directors, and BDO Unibank.
CFA Society Philippines hosted a booth at the summit to promote the Certificate in ESG Investing. This certificate, offered by CFA Institute, equips investment professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to integrate ESG factors into their investment processes. It covers a range of topics, including ESG analysis, portfolio management, and the broader context of ESG factors in investment decision-making. The event provided an excellent platform for representatives to engage with fellow CFA charterholders and other industry executives. In attendance from CFA Society Philippines were Dr. Robert B. Ramos, CFA, President and Chairman; Mr. Basil Jason Go, CFA, Board of Trustee; Mr. Smith Lim, Treasurer; Ms. Rizchelle Sampang-Manaog, CPAE, Program Director; and Mr. Rey Gargantilla, CPAE, Program Manager. Their participation highlighted the Society’s commitment to promoting ESG practices and sustainable investment.
